How to Stop Bleeding After Oral Surgery

Bleeding after oral surgery is normal. Whether it is a tooth extraction or another type of procedure, mild bleeding is not considered an emergency. However, persistent bleeding after undergoing an oral procedure may require prompt professional intervention. If you experience excessive bleeding, it may indicate potential complications that affect the body’s ability to clot at the surgery site. Clotting is crucial for protecting exposed internal tissue to prevent infections as new tissue forms. With this in mind, it is advisable to bite down on a gauze pad over the surgery site to aid in bleeding control and clot formation.

In the case of persistent bleeding, don’t worry. There are several measures you can take to manage the situation before seeking professional help. The most effective way to stop bleeding after oral surgery is to apply firm pressure by biting down on folded gauze for at least half an hour. This is a simple yet effective way to stop bleeding without compromising the effectiveness of your treatment.

Additionally, avoid disruptive actions, such as spitting frequently, rinsing vigorously, or touching the surgical site with your fingers or tongue. This goes a long way in enhancing recovery and minimizing the risk of injuries that can lead to bleeding. In the case of discomfort, apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek near the surgical site, as it helps constrict blood vessels and reduces bleeding.

While these measures may control bleeding temporarily, it is crucial to seek professional help. Contact our office for effective and personalized treatment.

Is It Normal for Stitches to Come Out Immediately After Oral Surgery?
If you undergo an oral surgical procedure, the stitches placed to control bleeding and clot formation can become dislodged. This is particularly true for tooth extractions, such as wisdom tooth surgery. If you undergo a tooth extraction and notice that your stitches have come out, it is not an emergency, even if it happens on the same day as the procedure. However, complex procedures like bone grafting require immediate attention if the stitches come out, as it can affect the treatment and increase downtime. Before undergoing oral surgery, schedule a consultation with our surgeon to ensure you have the necessary information before your next visit.

What Causes Bad Breath?

Did you know that bad breath, or halitosis, starts in the mouth nearly 80% of the time? However, sometimes bad breath is a symptom of underlying diseases that require early intervention. If you experience persistent bad breath despite regularly brushing and flossing, you may be dealing with bacteria on your teeth and gums. The most common causes of halitosis include foods such as garlic, smoking, infections, gum disease, and certain medications. Your dentist can identify the main cause of the problem and recommend the best treatment to maintain fresh breath and long-lasting dental health. Don’t let bad breath escalate into a serious health problem. Schedule an appointment with our office to permanently resolve the issue.
